Pet peeve of mine

I have to vent about something that is one of my pet peeves.  I had a conversation with someone today and I realized quickly that he wasn't listening to what I was saying.  This person usually waits for his turn to talk or he talks over me.  When we spoke today I was answering a question he had and at that point he told me to "wait 'til I'm done talking"!  I stopped and completely shut him out.  I listened and understood what he was saying, but he doesn't talk TO people, he talks AT them.

I know that I'm guilty of this myself sometimes, but I try and make a point to listen to people when they talk.  My understanding of communication is that if two individuals are trying to talk, it becomes a give and take.  A message is sent and feedback returned.  If he wanted to talk AT me he could have given a memo or a flier because that was how effective the dialogue was.

  1. I'm so with you on this one, Brad. I can't stand when someone refuses to listen to what I'm saying when I've had the courtesy to do the same. Also, talking over me sends me into the red zone fast.

  2. I work with a few people that do that very same thing. I have found that I become impatient and short with people like that. They take it as me being a b***h but I get tired of trying to have conversation with someone who doesn't really care about a thing I am saying. I think my biggest pet peeve is when someone at work asks me how to do something, I show them, then they proceed to tell me that it is now how it is done. Well, why did you ask me if you know how to do it. I can be very frustrating and I feel that they have wasted my time.

  3. I know a couple of people that do the exact same thing! It doesn't matter what you say or how you say it to them they can't understand the point. Family is the worst in my opinion because you don't want to sound being bossy and know-it-all to them, but it seems to sound that way to them anyways..... People need people skills 101! lol

  4. I know exactly what you mean, I hate when you're trying to have a conversation with someone and you try to tell your side of it, but they just won't shut up and let you talk!

  6. I feel your pain. There is nothing more frustrating than being talked at instead of talked to. Give me the opportunity to discuss the issue and I'm sure we can come up with a compromise. But if you treat me as if I'm incapable of participating, I probably won't.

  9. Teachers feel that way often. I feel as though I'm talking AT people who aren't listening to me!
